What are the most important dimensions to consider?

The most important dimension consideration is space surrounding the table so that people aren’t not squeezed in like sardines.  Ideally, your guests should be able to sit at a comfortable distance from the table and then be able to slide their chair back to get up from the table and walk easily around the table to get in and out of the dining area.  Therefore, if you have a narrow dining room, look for a narrow dining table.  Dining table dimensions vary widely and it’s better to have a narrow dining table with sufficient clearance on all sides than a wide table and not enough clearance.  Since it’s much easier to buy a new table than renovate the dining space, most people will opt to get a narrower table… unless you’re undergoing a major renovation anyway.

One advantage of open concept living spaces compared to enclosed dining spaces is there is more space to accommodate larger tables (usually, but not always).  Often it’s merely a matter of allocating space between the living room area and dining area.

Another important dimension is the height from chair seat to table top.  There’s nothing worse than having legs wedged in without enough clearance.  Fortunately, most dining table sets are designed with proper clearance.  The issue comes to light if you buy chairs independently from the table such as having an antique table and then buying chairs that are slightly too tall (seat-wise).

One final dimension to consider is distance in between the chairs and from chair to end of the table.  There needs to be sufficient dining space.  Wider chairs help create more space, but may restrict the number of people that can be accommodated.
